#18–San Diego Padres (68-93) – 5th Place NL West (18 Cards)

The Friars took a huge step backward in 1979, winning 12 games less than the previous season.  In fact one less win and they would have shared the cellar with the equally woeful Braves.  After Dave Winfield (.308-34-118) there wasn't much offense at all.  Gene Tenace (.263-20-67) was the only other Padre in double digits for homers.  This team was definitely offensively challenged.  Starters Randy Jones (11-12, 3.64), Gaylord Perry (12-11, 3.06), Bob Shirley (8-16, 3.38) and Eric Rasmussen  (6-9, 3.27) all had ERA's in the 3's, with Perry being the only one sporting a record above .500.  Closer Rollie Fingers had his worst year as a pro saving just 13 games and sporting an era of 4.52.

Editor’s Note:  Tony started me out with some really good player photos.  I was able to supplement it with a gift from ebay that arrived in the mail today.  That gift was a 1979 Padre yearbook that I bought for $3.  With shipping this treasure trove of photos cost me a full $5 and it was worth every penny !  11 of the 18 cards in this set came from that yearbook that wore out my scanner tonight.  Once I complete all the teams I’m going to scan an additional 16 photos and update some of the cards from the original 1979 set with these great yearbook photos of Winfield, Perry and Ozzie.
